July 17 – 19: Frenchboro, Swans Island and Seal Bay

After the cruise broke up, we had hoped to continue east with a goal of reaching lovely remote Roque Island. We were there two years ago and swore not to go back unless there was going to be good weather! However, with fog and strong Southwesterly winds in the forecast, we decided to start working our way south. First stop was Frenchboro, which is known for its lovely harbor, amazing lobster dinners and blueberry pie at Lunts on the waterfront, and lack of visitor moorings. We were excited to find there were several visitor moorings available, but we soon found out why – the moorings are poorly protected and uncomfortable; and sadly, Lunts decided not to open this year. In search of a more comfortable spot, we moved on to Burnt Coat Harbor on Swans Island, and enjoyed dinner on Gannet as the fog moved in and out (mostly in!).

Frenchboro is as pretty as ever, but alas, no lobster dinners this year.

There’s a boat out there somewhere…..

The next day the weather started to go downhill: The fog was thick, the wind was picking up, and storms were forecast overnight. We had a nasty passage, with lobster pots and lobster boats to dodge in the fog, and a building, chilly breeze. We made our way to Seal Bay on Vinalhaven, which is a very protected harbor, and dug our anchor into the thick Maine mud there! It blew hard overnight and we were glad to be somewhere snug.

  1. Shame about the dearth of lobster dinners in Frenchboro. 30 years ago, together with Katie, Jeremy and his parents Laurie and Christine I seem to remembering buying lobsters which were cooked for us while we went for a very good walk in the beautiful surrounding countryside. We built up a good appetite and the lobsters were delicious. EE
