March 2: Indian River Boat Tour

One of the most popular tours in this area is the Indian River. The area is a nature preserve, so only licensed tour boats are allowed to go in, and they must row rather than using their engines, in order not to disturb the complex root systems that hold the river bank together. Before the hurricane, the tree canopy was much more dense. For an idea of how eerie it would have looked then, check out the scenes in Pirates of the Caribbean featuring Calypso’s house, which were filmed here!

While our guide, Kelvin, had the hard work of rowing us for a mile upstream, all we had to do was sit back and enjoy the view! At the far end there is a bush bar, where we were offered samples of bush rum – slightly suspect-looking local rum with various herbs steeped in it. Then a gentle ride back down with the current in the late evening sun.
