October 12 – 18: South River, Annapolis

After the Chester River, we moved over to the Western Shore of Maryland. As it was a Saturday, there were plenty of boats out racing off Annapolis, including J-35 Aunt Jean, which we raced against more than 25 years ago! We found a lovely anchorage in Harness Creek off South River. When we woke up it was 42 degrees outside and not much warmer inside – BRRR!! We spotted a marina a little further up the river and were able to get a slip there, where we’ve been for the past 10 days. It’s turned out to be a great place to get a lot of our remaining jobs done. We were able to spend a couple of days at the Annapolis Boat Show, once on our own and once with a colleague of Jeremy’s, who also took us to dinner at Annapolis Yacht Club. We also attended a rendezvous with Salty Dawg, the rally we are joining to sail south. It felt like the first day at a new school, walking into a room full of about 200 strangers, with no idea who we will make friends with; but they are all very welcoming and we are going to have a great time on the rally. The weather warmed up while we were here but we are now in another cold snap – hopefully our last for a very long time! We expect to leave here on Thursday and make our way down to Hampton, stopping in a few places along the way.

    • No – we’re going to Antigua, why would we need heat??? I think I was actually the one who veto’d adding heat because it would take up all my galley storage…. Our propane regulator is due to be replaced tomorrow so we will be able to have hot food for the first time in two weeks. Meanwhile we have a lot of blankets! Isn’t cruising glamorous?

      • Hahaha! We once were on a B40 that had a fireplace. After a rainy cold passage to Maine it was heaven. We too rely on blankets!
