The highlight of a cruise in the Grenadines is usually the Tobago Cays, and this time was no exception. The feeling of remoteness (even though you can see Canouan Island), the reef that protects you from swells but still lets ocean breezes blast through, and the amazingly clear water make for a wonderful experience. We made the short trip over from Mayreau, coming in through the southern channel since the usual passage was crammed full of catamarans and felt too tight for us. The moorings seemed a bit shallow, so we found a good spot to anchor. Services in the Tobago Cays are provided by boat guys: Desperado claimed us. He picked us up in his boat and took us over to the lobster BBQ on Petit Bateau – delicious! Last time we were here, the boat guys would come around to sell you bread, pain chocolat and ice, and take your trash. Now they are more interested in selling you lobster dinners. However, Mr. Quality came through for us.
Baradal Island is a turtle sanctuary with a protected swimming area, and did not disappoint! We also snorkelled over a deeper part of the swimming area and saw interesting fish. Horseshoe Reef, which protects the entire anchorage, used to have good snorkeling. Lately, the reefs have deteriorated, and the fish that are there aren’t worth the effort to fight against the current on the reef. We did short hikes on Jamesby Island and Petit Bateau, being rewarded by views of the amazing colors in the water. A French woman driving a dinghy very fast through the swim area almost hit Jeremy (words were exchanged) but he still managed to get the GoPro footage of a turtle, below.
