May 5 – 9: Jolly Harbor, Antigua – preparing for passage

We moved to a slip in Jolly Harbor for final preparations before leaving for Bermuda. Winds were light and it was very hot, not ideal for the hard work we had to do. My cousin Tom arrived as a crew member for the delivery — he’s previously done long passages on the Pacific and Indian Oceans, so this will be his third ocean. We’ve figured out that we really haven’t spent much time together since he was 4, so it will be fun to get to have this time together!

By far the hardest job so far was to take the outboard off the dinghy and stow it in one of our deep aft lockers – a great photo for this blog would have been me at the bottom of the locker trying to push the heavy outboard into the right spot to fit, however the guys decided instead to hold on to the thing so it wouldn’t crush me. Much appreciated! At this point, most things are stowed, most of the provisioning is done, and there is only a short list of last minute jobs to be done in the morning before we leave. One complication is that everyone’s StarLink service changed today, so we just have to hope that it will work OK out at sea. All being well I will try to do a daily blog post, or you can follow us at

We use every square inch of space to store things – here I am stowing vacuum bagged clothes in a gap under our bunk, in front of the water tank
Plenty of spare diesel in case we run into a light patch, which is quite likely 3 or 4 days out. There are four more cans on the other side
Tom manages to relax!
The outboard and fuel tank had been padlocked on for security reasons. Although we were actually able to find the key, the lock was so corroded that Jeremy ended up cutting it off.
We put our crew to work scrubbing the bottom of the dinghy
Buying provisions from a local fruit and veg stand. I like to buy from these stands whenever possible, as the quality is great, and food that hasn’t been refrigerated keeps much better
The boatyard is hard at work hauling out boats for the summer. At 8:30 a.m. this was their third of the day – how does that compare to Marblehead Trading Company?
Something we look forward to at the end of each day is a swim at nearby Jolly Beach. Thankfully most of the tourists have gone now. The water is so warm now that it’s barely refreshing! However it’s still a nice way to end the day
