May 11: Passage Day 1

We left Jolly Harbour around 11:30 on May 10, with 928 miles to Bermuda. It was an emotional moment saying goodbye to the Caribbean Islands, where we’ve enjoyed such a wonderful winter. We had a great sail up the back of Barbuda, passing about 5 miles from the island but still barely able to see it. Overnight the wind gusted up a bit, causing us to shorten sail, but it was only a tease as it promptly dropped. We are now doing about 7 knots in 10-12 knot winds, and our main problem is keeping cool! So far the fish have been elusive but we remain optimistic. We covered 170 miles in our first 24 hours which is a good start.

Only 928 miles to Bermuda!
Sails up!
Leaving Antigua behind
The faint smudge on the horizon is all we saw of Barbuda, despite being only 5 miles away!
Tom catches up with the office while on watch
I try to keep out of the sun
Just over 170 miles in our first 24 hours
