April 2026: Tobago Cays

At Baradel Island

Tobago Cays is a beautiful spot, with several small islands protected by Horseshoe Reef. The water is an amazing color. One of the islands is a turtle sanctuary, and there is a dinghy pass you can take out through the reef to excellent snorkeling. We knew we wanted to snorkel outside the reef but it needs settled conditions, so we visited the area several times hoping for the right weather. Finally the wind died, the water grew clearer, and we were a Go! We tried out the GoPro and took some video – still working on editing, but here are some samples.

Outside the reef is Petit Tabac, a tiny island which can only be reached in a small boat. We were able to make it out there one day and explored a little. This island is where Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley filmed the final scene in Pirates of the Caribbean 3 – I think some of the seaweed must have been picked up first!

On one trip here we ran into friends on Morning Bird and all went the beach barbecue. We went again on our last night here for my birthday.

Birthday Celebration!

There are short trails up most of the islands, and the views are stunning. Here are just a few more shots.

In total I think we’ve spent about 14 days in the Tobago Cays this year, and loved the swimming, the stunning views, and the exploring. We snorkeled almost every day, and saw sharks twice – they didn’t seem interested in us so we didn’t worry too much. Never did get them on video so we will try again next year! We look forward to returning.
